India Post ensures that critical services are provided.

Post Offices are government-run postal facilities that provide mail services such as letter and parcel delivery.

It serves as an agent for the Indian government in discharging services to people, such as receiving and distributing inland mail, postcards, parcels, postal stamps, and money orders (money transfer).

The Department of Posts (DoP) has served as the country's backbone for over 150 years, and it is the world's most widely distributed postal network.

Since March 25, 2020, when millions of Indians have been forced to stay indoors due to the lockdown, about 4 lakh postal department employees on the ground have worked nonstop to deliver packages, letters, and even cash, ensuring that basic services are maintained even though daily flights and train services have been suspended.

Since postal services are critical services that must continue uninterrupted during any partial lockdown or restrictions imposed by the respective State/UT Governments, the Postal Circles are hereby directed to follow the specific guidelines.

These unsung heroes risked their lives to bring cash to pensioners, elderly people who couldn't get to a bank to withdraw money, and Direct Benefit Transfer (DBT) recipients across the country. 

They used special steps, such as extending the postal mail motor service to ferry letters, parcels, answer sheets, medications, PPE & COVID test kits, and ventilators, as a service to the state.

Regardless of existing legislation, the government has implemented detailed guidelines for Post offices; 

  1. All post offices must ensure strict compliance with Covid acceptable conduct at all times, such as regular hand washing, use of sanitizers, wearing masks, maintaining social distance, and so on.

  2. Heads of offices must ensure that public halls, counters, corridors, canteens, and parking are not overcrowded.

  3. To effectively contain the spread of COVID-19, all workers over the age of 45 are encouraged to get vaccinated.

  4. They can opt to introduce staggered office entry and exit timings in their Circles, depending on local conditions, in order to prevent overcrowding.

  6. Until further orders, biometric attendance will be suspended and physical attendance registers will be held.

  7. Employees in administrative departments may be able to operate from home in certain cases. Officials working from home should be reachable by phone, email, and make themselves available in the office as required, even at short notice, given the demands of the job.
